How it works

The first of five prompts

“Today I will do something for somebody else.”

Each student says their own version of it. The other four prompts are in the slides, one to a morning.

1
Put the prompt up, and answer it yourself first.

One slide on the board before the students come in. Saying yours first sets how small it should be, and it means nobody has to go first.

2
Go round the room.

Each student finishes the sentence in a few words, and it has to be something they could have done by home time. A form of thirty takes about ninety seconds. Write down two or three names as you go.

3
Ask those two or three the next morning.

Before the new prompt goes up, ask them how it went. Nobody has to explain a promise they did not keep, and “I didn’t” is a complete answer. Without it, the promises stop meaning much by about the second week.

Nothing to print. Five prompts are in the slides, one to a morning, and five more are on the teacher guide. After those, the last slide asks students to bring you one of their own. Make sure you come back for Volume Two. Follow @thepastoralguide to hear when it lands.
