Ask which number feels closest to today. A student just points, so there’s no writing or talking needed to start.

Follow their lead.

Ask gently what’s behind the number if they want to say more. If not, that’s okay too. There’s no wrong number.

Check back another day.

Use the same scale again and notice if the number moves.
