How it works

A student may use a slip to tell you something serious, so treat every slip as a possible disclosure. Empty the box every day without fail, pass anything that needs it to your designated safeguarding lead the same day, and be honest with the form that you cannot promise to keep something to yourself if they or somebody else is not safe.

1
Find a box and put it where a student can reach it unwatched.

A shoebox with a slot cut in the lid is all you need. Stick the label from the pack on the box, put the wall notice up beside it, and leave the slips where students can reach them.

2
Tell the form how it works.

Explain when you empty the box and what you would have to pass on. Keep the slips within easy reach, because the box only works if a student can use it without having to ask you for a slip.

3
Empty the box at the same time every day.

Do this whether or not you are expecting anything to be in it. Go and find the student the same day for anything ticked “today, please”, and within the week for the rest. When you go and find the student, The Quiet Word is a short guide to the conversation.

Tell the form that you empty the box every day, and then make sure you do. A box that might not be read is worse than having no box at all, because a student who has put a slip in it believes they have asked for help. Even a slip with only a name on it is a student asking to talk to you.
