How it works
What the front of the sheet asks
By half term I will
Students write down one goal, rather than three goals or a list of subjects.
Is this yours to do?
If the goal depends on somebody else making a decision, students rewrite it as the part that is down to them.
What it depends on
Students write down something to do most weeks, something to stop doing, and something or somebody they will need.
If a week goes badly
Students write down the smallest version of their goal, so they have something to keep them going through a bad week.
Students fill in the back of the sheet seven weeks later. It asks whether the thing that got in the way was the thing they predicted, and most of the time it turns out that it was not.
In the first week, students fill in the front of the sheet. Before they start, explain question 2 out loud, because most students have never been taught how to do it.
Six weeks is long enough for students to forget what they wrote, and looking back at it in the last week is the part that makes a difference.
In the last week, hand the sheets back. Students read what they wrote on the front first, then write what happened, what got in the way, whether to keep, change or drop the goal, and one line about the rest of term.
A goal that depends on a grade, a team selection or someone else saying yes is more of a wish than a goal, because it is not fully in the student’s control. That is why the sheet asks what the goal depends on before anything else, and helps students rewrite it as the part that is down to them.
