How it works
Made to Look Real · Case A · The voice note
“A voice note arrives from a parent’s account. It sounds exactly like them. They say you need to send some money right now.”
Each pair takes a case like this and decides what they would check, what they would do and who they would tell.
To start, pairs are given eight cards, each describing something seen online, and sort them into real, made and can’t tell yet. The slides then show what was going on with each one.
The slides then explain what a deepfake is, why looking for glitches works less well every year, and five checks that don’t depend on your eyes. The checks are who posted it first, where else it is, whether it wants a fast reaction, whether they would really say it, and asking another way.
You then model the checks out loud on a voice note, and the class works through a photo of a cracked bridge together.
Each pair gets one of six cases, from a voice note asking for money to a fake news clip. They write what they would check, what they would do and who they would tell, then swap sheets and mark them against three ticks.
To finish, every student writes a Before you share it card. The lesson ends with a discussion question that has no right answer, and a private exit slip that nobody collects.
One of the cases is a fake sexual image of a student. You teach this one from a slide instead of giving it to pairs, and the answer is always the same: don’t open it or pass it on, and tell an adult. A lesson on this topic may lead some students to tell you about something that has happened to them or a friend, so make sure you know who your safeguarding lead is before you teach it. The laws and helplines named are UK ones, so check the law where you are if you teach elsewhere.
